It almost sounds like a joke. You don’t eat when you are fasting right? Well, here is the thing. Level 1 you are eating two solid meals every day. That is pretty normal. And even level 2 you are still eating a solid healthy meal every day. Our body runs off the fuel we give it. What we eat may be the most important health decision we make. We need healthy nutrients and energy to feel good and be healthy!
Imagine This
You have a friend who strikes it rich. They offer to buy you any car in the world. Bentley, Ferrari whatever. Here’s the catch: it’s the last car you can ever own. You are going to be driving that clunker Bentley around till your final day.
So what do you do? Well, you take the best care of that car that you can. You park in the back of the lot so it doesn’t get scratched. Maintenance is completed ahead of schedule. Premium fuel only.
The truth is people would take far better care of a million dollar vehicle than they typically do of their own body… Which is priceless!
Now you can save a lot of money on a fasting regimen. I encourage people to look at that as an investment. Take the money you save from forgoing a meal and put it into higher quality food for when you are eating. Premium fuel only!
A Place to Start
In general lower-carbohydrate diets work best with a Simple Fasting program. Lower carbohydrates mean less insulin which helps the body adjust to a fasted interval. More aggressive carbohydrate elimination is helpful for weight-loss and improving blood sugar. The most important place to start is to avoid as many of the simple carbs as possible: soda, candy/sweets, pastries, deserts and alcohol. I also highly recommend avoiding artificial sweeteners of all kinds.
These meals can be very inexpensive and easy. A couple hard boiled eggs and a bag of nuts and you have lunch on the go. You never have to eat fast food again. Nuts are also very convenient as a snack for people who just have to have something in between meals or need a backup plan. Nuts are low-carb, healthy and satisfying. Almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, macadamia nuts etc. No cooking or refrigeration needed.
You can pan fry up a chicken breast and then some some broccoli in butter with salt and pepper for a simple, healthy and satisfying dinner. There are other foods that can be sparingly added. I am just not too keen on milk for weight loss.
Meals can also be more complex. I encourage people to make low-carb versions of things they would like to eat. Make spaghetti with a spaghetti squash instead of noodles. Throw on your favorite sauce and Parmesan and you are getting a very healthy low-carb dish.
Take your bread based dishes and start making it with nut flour. Very tasty, satisfying and low carb.
Make a stir-fry dish but replace the rice with cauliflower rice.
Make a big satisfying salad. Google “salad” and hit images for inspiration. Load it up with all kinds of good things. Grilled chicken, avocado, chic peas, dressing, carrots, peppers etc.
You are participating in an aggressive regimen. When you are eating they don’t have to be mini-meals. They can be normal meals. Enjoy it!
Make my favorite breakfast or have breakfast for lunch: Scrambled egg or omelet with avocado and a pinch of sea salt cooked in coconut oil. Add some salsa or even some Sriracha to take it to the next level.

TIP:
Make sure to avoid taking supplements or any other irritant on an empty stomach. The classic example is a multivitamin. If you take a vitamin in the morning with water or coffee it probably wont set well. If you need it, take it with your next meal. Work with your doctor if you have medications that need to be at a certain time or with food.
More Thoughts on Dairy.
Think big picture for a minute. Milk… it’s about making the baby bigger. That’s a good thing! It’s a dangerous time for the little one. Get them growing! So milk is great… for babies, kids and anyone who needs to gain weight.
Milk just isn’t what you want for weight-loss. Cheese is basically concentrated milk so I can’t advise that either. Now dairy itself isn’t bad or unhealthy. Dairy could be very reasonable if you are fasting for reasons other than weight-loss. Especially if you are trying to keep your weight up.
More Thoughts on Carbs.
Carbohydrates in and of themselves are not all bad. When people have adjusted to a fasting practice or are fasting for reasons other than blood sugar control or weight-loss I often liberalize recommendations on carbohydrate restriction to some degree beyond the veggies and berries listed above.
There are many carb-based foods which can be quite healthy and can be successfully added to a fasting regimen. Examples in this group include oatmeal, fruits in addition to berries and grains like rice and quinoa.
